Book Review: Somewhere beyond the Sea by TJ Klune

Book Review: Somewhere Beyond the Sea by T.J. Klune

For those of you that know me, you know I tend to gravitate to books with a little magic in them. I will read anything, but I really enjoy reading about magic. It just makes the imaginary worlds I occupy more fun. I loved T.J. Klune’s first book House on the Cerulean Sea, so I couldn’t wait to get to read the sequel Somewhere Beyond the Sea. It didn’t disappoint. Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a charming and uplifting story that mixes magic with real-life emotions. Like the first book, it is set in a quirky little coastal town and picks up, Arthur and Linus’s stories where they last left off.  All of my favorite characters were there and the new addition of David the Yeti, allowed Klune to add humor while tackling the heavy themes in this book.  Klune strikes a perfect balance between humor and emotional depth as the story of the Baker-Parnassus family unfolds.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is an absolute gem. It’s funny, heartfelt, and full of magic in all the right ways. If you’re looking for a feel-good read that will leave you smiling and maybe crying, this is an excellent series to start. Please though, start with House on the Cerulean Sea and then read Somewhere Beyond the Sea, this is not a series that can be read out of order. Both books are available at the library or through Bridges/Libby.
